My Day at the Dog Beach

Today my son and I took Rusty to the dog beach. Officially it's known as Central Beach, part of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. My son and I enjoy going to the beach and we love being able to include our dog in the fun. In our area it's hard to find beaches that allow dogs so this place is a real find and worth the drive.

As you can see in this photo, we had a perfect summer day for our beach outing: blue skies, a slight breeze, and temperatures in the 70s. We were joined at the beach by lots of young people and families with dogs. It was such a popular locale that we had to park on the side of the road quite a ways from the designated parking lot.

My son enjoys playing in the sand as well as playing tricks on his unsuspecting mom. When I was occupied with a magazine, he pulled a fast one on me by digging such a big hole near me that the sand underneath me caved in pulling me in too. Splash - my legs hit the water at the bottom of his hole. Boy did he laugh at that.

Rusty had fun at the beach too. Although he loves going into the pond in our backyard, he's shy of Lake Michigan. I think the waves crashing in bother him. He likes to stay at the water's edge and won't come in no matter how much we coax him. Meanwhile other dogs on the beach will swim and fetch frisbees tossed into the waves. Safely stationed in the sand, Rusty enjoys greeting everyone that walks by him. He got sniffs from other dogs, air kisses from two men, and gentle pets from numerous children. The highpoint of his day was when two bikini clad girls made a huge fuss over him. They gave him so much attention their boyfriends got jealous!

Late in the afternoon when we trudged our way back to the car, I got my second surprise of the day. A parking ticket for $50. Drat, my first parking ticket ever. But still worth it all in my opinion.

It's really weird for me to think of lakes with waves that crash in, but I do remember that from visiting Lake Huron as a very small girl. The waves are even bigger than the waves of Puget Sound-- which makes sense since the bodies of water are bigger. But the Great Lakes don't have tides-- right? Anyway I enjoyed your pics of taking your dog to the beach. We have off-leash parks in this area and my friend knows all of them, but since I don't have a dog I don't know. We used to take our dog to the ocean with us, and he loved it.

I love the portrait of your dog! Very sweet and well composed and shot. I appreciate your visits and comments but it sometimes takes me a while to make a return visit.

Hi Kim,
Yes, that's why I thought I better identify the lake as Lake Michigan. Most lakes I've experienced only get waves from passing boats. I don't know about tides, interesting question.
There's an off-leash dog park in a nearby town that I've considered becoming a member of so my dog could socialize more. If it were closer to my home, I'm sure I would have joined by now.
I'm guessing cats don't enjoy the beach as much as dogs.
Thanks for your comment, Kim.

Thank you, Sara!
I took that photo with my cell phone. I was thrilled when I got home and saw how well it turned out. The glare was so strong at the beach I couldn't really see my photos there. I'm still hoping to get a real camera soon.
Thanks for your visit. You are always welcome here. The photos on your blog bring me a great deal of visual pleasure. I do hope you'll sell notecards on cafe press.
All the best,
Sarah

No tides on the Great Lakes as they are so far from the ocean. (This site has more info though, pretty cool: http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/faq2.html#17) Even the St. Lawrence River doesn't have tides until you get very close to the ocean. All fresh water too. I grew up in NY and spent a lot of time near Lake Ontario and on the St. Lawrence. The taste and buoyancy of salt water in the ocean always surprises me when I visit.

Sounds so idyllic, and Rusty is very cute!

I went to Lake Ontario once and remember there were waves there – not that big but enough to tickle your legs.
no waves in London, even though The Thames is tidal!

Thanks for the info, Sara!

Hi Deafinitely Girly,
The waves at this beach are at about chest height. There's a warning posted about undertow so we can't go out too far. Yesterday the water was so cold I didn't stay in for long although many others did.

Great photos Sarah... the one of Rusty with your cell phone turned out great!

It's funny how some dogs don't do waves. Obviously he's figured out that dry dogs get more cuddles.

Hi Ms. Toast Burner,
Yes, he is quite clever that way.
Of course, he's missing out on the fun of shaking off next to his people or jumping up on them and getting them wet too. *smiles*
